I like the deck against blue and red decks quite a lot though. Your ideal start every game is either Prince or Fblthp on turn 2, followed by Teferi and then either Thassa or Elite Guardmage on turn 4. That usually seals the deal. Board it out against aggro. Best against control and midrange decks, but also works as a temporary answer to Embercleave. Without it, it would just be an underpowered midrange deck. Keep in mind that it has a second ability that taps any creature for 3U. Cavalier fills a similar role while also being a creature that you can blink with Thassa.

Agent of Treachery is both an answer to problematic cards from your opponent but also a win condition. You want creatures with enter-the-battlefield triggers, not another expensive card. You also draw enough cards and gain enough life already. I feel like these matchups are already very good though, so if you need to cut something out of your sideboard to improve other matchups, it would be a reasonable cut.

The one card I could actually see improving the deck would be Deputy of Detentionwhich would give you more answers against cards like Oven and Clover, while also being a passable removal spell against the aggressive decks.

I have been beating all the Mono-Red decks pretty easily, because every creature you play replaces itself and blocks. You keep gaining life, Teferi stops them from playing Embercleave at instant speed, and sometimes you just get them with Time Wipe. After sideboard you bring in eight more cards. If they do counter them, then you just resolve the game-winning cards like Teferi or ECD. As I already mentioned, I have somehow not played against Clover yet, but in theory it should be a pretty bad matchup.

To optimally use Thassa, Deep-Dwelling, we need creatures with enter-the-battlefield effects. We can then blink them with Thassa to get their effect again. Blinking or flickering is Magic slang for exiling a creature and immediately returning it back. We have 15 creatures with enter the battlefield effect.

We particularly like Kiora Bests the Sea God. This spell fits perfectly in a blue Brawl deck and is a real powerhouse. Our mana base includes 17 Islands which gives us 25 lands total, which is a good number for a deck that wants to cast Thassa on turn 4 consistently.

With Theros Beyond Death being newly introduced to the format, I've been pouring my focus into analyzing the impact it has had. We are familiar with what the metagame was a month ago, but without a ton of results yet, I am going to do my best to break down some of the decks that have impressed me so far.

Simic-Based Ramp has been the most popular deck I have played against over the past few days. It's also the deck I have been having the most success with. Control decks have a really tough time beating all the value creatures plus Nissa, Who Shakes the World. The key addition is Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath. Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath gives the deck a new axis to fight on.

You can play it from the graveyard, which means you really don't need Quasiduplicate anymore. As great as that card can be, sometimes you don't want to cast it on turn three—but you're always happy to cast Uro. Uro works great alongside Cavalier of Thornsas it ramps you to Cavalier mana and Cavalier's self-mill turns on Uro's escape.

The other really nice part about playing Uro in this deck is that it's great against Hushbringer. One of the most popular sideboard cards against Elementals decks is Hushbringerbut with Hushbringer in play, you don't have to sacrifice Uro. The other notable addition is Thassa, Deep-Dwelling. Thassa has been very impressive alongside enters-the-battlefield effects. While this is the list I have been testing, I am going to add a copy of Agent of Treachery moving forward. Having powerful tutor targets with Finale of Devastation is very important, and Thassa plus Agent of Treachery is basically unbeatable.

There are a few different variations of this same strategy. I am lumping the Simic-based ramp decks together, even though splashing or playing a different set of ramp effects is perfectly viable.

It's also possible to leave Uro out and try to abuse Thassa more. This is the Temur Elementals list of Crokeyz has been playing:. If you steal an opponent's creature with The Akroan War and then flicker it out with Thassa you can permanently gain control of it. Omnath can actually get rid of opposing permanents each time it enters the battlefield, which is quite valuable. The power level of this deck is quite high, though I do believe it is more vulnerable to Hushbringer compared to Simic Ramp, as currently constructed.

The manabase also gets worse once you add the red. Right now, between these two decks I lean toward Simic, but this deck does abuse Thassa way better.

The most hype going into the release of Theros Beyond Death centered around devotion decks in Standard. These are more or less completely new decks, compared to Simic Ramp-style decks, that are more of a spin-off of previous archetypes.

Right now, my favorite devotion deck is Mono-Black. There are a few different ways to actually build it. It's clear your payoff card is Gray Merchant of Asphodelbut the question becomes how to best support it. There's the Mono-Black Beatdown plan that uses Gray Merchant of Asphodel as a way to simply do the last few points of damage, or you can play a version that is more midrange, and creature-sacrifice oriented. The list I have liked the most is one I caught Wyatt Darby playing recently.Today I want to share with you what I found, and which cards and decks over- or underperformed for me.

You can also watch the full VOD here. These are some of the decks that I enjoyed playing the most with. They mostly revolve around what I think will turn out to be the best card in the set: Thassa, Deep-Dwelling.

Agent comes into play, you steal any of their permanents, at the end of turn you flicker Agent with Thassa and steal one more thing. Absolutely disgusting. Nyx Lotus also overperformed, and in combination with Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner you can either use it as soon as turn 4 or get twice as much mana.

The only issue I would be careful about is playing so many 4-of legendaries. Between ThassaNyx LotusGadwickKioraand Fblthp you are looking at legendary permanents, which means that you will get stuck with multiple extra copies in your hand. You could play Arboreal Grazer instead, but then your deck needs lands. The idea here is to play Risen Reef or Cloudkin Seer into Thassa and start generating card advantage, follow it up with one of the Cavaliers and find Agent and steal everything they have.

This deck also performed nicely, but I am still not sure about what the best early game for this deck is. This deck could have had too many cards at the top end and perhaps it needs an extra land or two, but maybe I just kept drawing all the expensive cards.

Thirst for Meaning and Omen of the Sea are nice new card selection additions that help you find Fires for turn 4, which is the most important card of the deck. Being able to deal 4 damage instead of 3 with Deafening Clarion can be a pretty big deal against cards like Questing Beast and dealing damage to all planeswalkers in the process makes this card very good. Afterward, there are multiple synergies between the creatures.

Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded works similarly to Sneak Attack and it also grants all your other creatures haste. Between Purphoros and Cavalier of Flames, you should be able to always attack with everything right away. Ilharg, the Raze-Boar and Drakuseth are two more fatties that help you close the game as fast as possible.

Thassa Is Busted

This is the starting point for a Mono-Blue Devotion deck like we saw in formats past. Foundry of the Consuls is no Mutavaultbut it's a good combo with Bident of Thassaand it's at least some reward for playing a manabase that only needs one color. Bident is even more important to this deck than it was before, and it's very possible that the deck wants a third copy.

I was wary of drawing too many legendary cards, so I'm starting with two Bidents and one Hall of Triumph for now, all of which combo with the full eight evasive one-drops. I like that Faerie Miscreant stacks well in multiples, and the Gudul Lurker can be cast on turn three if you don't have other uses for your mana.

The one Hypnotic Siren is there to hedge against having a ton of lands out, though it could easily just be the fourth Lurker. The disruptive threats are key to this deck.

All three of these creatures provide a body plus a good way to interact with the opponent. Stratus Dancer is a great card to run out on turn two when you are curving out, while still being awesome to play face-down against control decks.

Stratus Dancer has already proved to be great in plenty of other decks, but this type of deck might be the best home for it. Here's the payoff for being mono-blue: You get Shorecrasher providing a very powerful three-drop and lots of blue pips to make sure that Thassa and Master are operating at peak efficiency.

For how much Thassa and Master dominated in the last Standard, they have not made a splash in this one—but the addition of some new cards could change that.

Earnings whisper service

In particular, Harbinger is a very powerful two-drop, and that may be enough to push this deck over the top. The way this deck plays is classic aggro control.

It's got games where it just curves out and ignores the opponent, but it also has enough disruption that it can deal with opposing threats as necessary.

Keeping mana up for Silumgar Sorcerer and Harbinger of the Tides is often a good plan, and cards like Harbinger or Master of Waves can swing boards drastically in your favor. A lot of what the deck is trying to do is set up a good Bident hit, and if that looks possible you should play to it.

Once you hit and draw two cards, the odds that you can continue to do so are high, especially with Stratus Dancer to stop any sweepers. Another direction to go with mono-blue is the artifact route, and a couple new cards in particular have my gears turning. The card driving this deck is Thopter Spy Networkwhich is an absurdly powerful card once it gets going. In an ideal world, you play the Spy Network, draw a card immediately, and then start cranking out Thopters.

If it's giving you a card plus a Thopter every turn, it's fantastic—and all it takes to get going is a Darksteel Citadel. The rest of the deck is built to enable that, and has a ton of other synergies going on. Thopter Spy Network is an excuse to play Springleaf Drum ; once you're drumming, Ornithopter and Faerie Miscreant start making more sense.

Likewise, Ensoul Artifact piggybacks on the presence of Darksteel CitadelOrnithopterand Drum, and offers the deck another hard-hitting threat. Some decks have a very hard time beating a Citadel that has grown a soul, and against those decks assembling that combo is a high priority.

Lastly, Ghostfire Blade is a very strong card with enough targets, and a deck full of Thopters and Ornithopter s seems like a good place for it. You have to get artifacts from somewhere, and these two cards provide a good place.

The Walker is cool because it's a play on turn two or turn six, and can accumulate a lot of value over the course of the game—all while making you more resistant to sweepers. Whirler Rogue is a lot of action in one card, and it doesn't take much for me to want to get this into a deck. I like a lot of what this deck is doing, but it feels like it needs more good ways to get Thopters, and a little more disruption wouldn't hurt.

As such, let's take a look at what a blue-red version might look like. By adding red, we get to take advantage of Pia and Kiran Nalaarwhich is a very powerful card. Chandra's parents may be legendary, but drawing multiples is still good, and I'm not particularly concerned about getting Nalaar-flooded.If your devotion is greater than or equal to the number of cards in your deck you win the game.

It is also cheaper to play than either of them at 2 mana rather than 3 or 4. The disadvantage is the increased difficulty of draw yourself to death effects. Unlike the other two if you would lose if you draw with an empty library so there is a bit more counting and planning if you wish to do it that way.

The jankiest option being Leveler but you can Tooth and Nail or Victimize for them both which is an advantage I suppose. So if your devotion is zero and you have zero cards in your deck then if I do my math, carry the one, divide by zero.

Additional options include Paradigm Shift and to a more expensive casting degree Morality Shift. Some creature options to deck yourself with. Divining Witch is a spellshaper which turns any card in your hand into a Demonic Consultation. Hermit Druid is a well known self mill option but to run it without hitting a basic land means you have to run a completely non basic land base.

In this case we still want to prevent ourselves from dying but can also use a cheaper option to cast, Spoils of the Vault. There are a number of ways to use this including just winning from having 5 devotion to blue.

There are a ton of ways to empty your deck but it starts to take more and more pieces to do. This card is so strong it even made flashhulk stronger. Look at doomsday piles. They work now very consistent without yawgwill and led.
